Madeleine Montano - graphic designer
When I was 14, I decided that I wanted to be a graphic designer. I didn’t even know that graphic designer was a career choice. I thought teacher or veterinarian were the best options to make money. But looking back on how I spent my free time, it was pretty easy to pin point the budding desire to communicate non-verbally.
My family had lots of subscriptions to magazines and I liked to cut out all the images and different type face words to recreate my own communications. As this became my favorite way to pass time, I experimented with different glues, tapes and staples to adhere everything seamlessly to the walls. My parents had to stop me from destroying there house so I started to buy blank books and continued to experiment on the pages until it was filled from cover to back.
Then it hit me, after I filled my first book, that I wanted to be a graphic designer. The first time I ever heard the words “GRAPHIC DESIGNER” was on the TV for a Colorado Institute of Art Commercial. I truly thought at 14 I could build a better magazine than what was available to me. Here I was, not even able to drive a car and already had my future job plans determined. I was going to be a graphic designer and I was never going to look back.
